Hear me out:
![]() | 1) A video game adaptation of the 1989 Fred Savage/Christian Slater vehicle The Wizard. |
![]() | 2) A game called 「学生運動’69!」 in which the player chooses student rebels from Japan's various Communist factions (民青派、中核、ML、革マル、全共闘, etc.) and goes to battle with gebabou sticks against the State's riot guards, and of course, other student factions. Different national campuses are available for fighting backdrops. Those players who can man the barracades and protect their protests from being crashed by the other student groups can advance to the 連合赤軍 (United Red Army) round where one must survive a week of Marxist ideological training - without being lynched by one's own group leaders! |
the second idea seems cool ... i saw recently a decumentary about Palestine and there was some footage of a trial with Japanese terrorists /gerirero? what is a japanese word for it?/ ... they looked as sexy as baader-meinhoff, so aloof and distant ... do Japanese fashionistas have this 'bloody glamour' thing with United Red Army like Germans do with RAF? I mean Gudrun Ensslin is like Twiggy almost now ...
Posted by: porandojin at February 9, 2005 9:16 PMThe Japanese Red Army were a bunch of ideologically-vacant thugs who were sent on bloody murder-suicide missions so that their leader Shigenobu Fusako could rack up more terrorist cred with her lover George Habash of the PLFP far away from the action. At Tel Aviv, they killed mostly Puerto Rican pilgrims, but the Palestinians sadly embraced the Japanese men as heroes. The rumor goes that kids named Kozo etc started showing up in the occupied territories in the mid-70s.
Also, it's thought that the JRA introduced suicide bombing to the Middle East.

I guess you are refering to the JRA's part in the Lod Airport Massacre.
Suicide missions, of course, have a long history in various parts of the world.

Well, sure. But as far as I've read, no one used suicide tactics in the war against Israel until the JRA all killed themselves after shooting a bunch of Puerto Ricans in the Lod Airport massacre. Kozo Okamoto ran out of ammo/grenades, and now lives with political asylum in Lebanon.
Posted by: marxy at February 9, 2005 11:52 PMAlso,
the JRA's part
The Lod Airport Massacre was done BY the JRA. They didn't "play a part" - they're the ones that did all the killing. Maybe the PLFP had planned it and used the JRA as willing foot soldiers, but it was a JRA operation overall.

Okamoto served his time in an Israeli prison. Probably Japan will put him in jail again if he returns to this country.
What a strange time that must have been. If you've never seen JL Godard's Weekend, I recommend it.
BTW I'd heard it was the Tamil Tigers who refined suicide bombing.

Do you really think that the klutzy, haphazard operation at the Lod Airport inspired anyone?
I read that suicide bombing in the Mid-east conflicts really got underway with an operation by Lebanese guerillas against the Americans in 1983.
By that time the Tamil Tigers had been suicide bombing regularly for several years in Sri Lanka.
But I think we'd need to look at the detailed history to try to unravel how this ugly situation evolved. Linking it to the singular Lod Airport event seems odd. Why you might as well try to argue that the 9.11 group got their ideas from the Japanese kamikaze pilots. Sounds kind of irrelevant, no?

The legend is that the Palestinians were overjoyed, and the fact that Lebanon gave Kozo Okamoto asylum and sent the other 4 JRA guys back to Japan shows what a big deal the Lod attack was for the Arab terrorist network. Read up on the post-Lod handling of the JRA: those guys were bonified heroes to the Lebanon, Syria, Libya etc.

Well, that's the crazy thing. Supposedly, the JRA were the first to be willing to kill themselves for their mission (directly related to kamikaze ethics), and that was a great inspiration to everyone else. Kind of like, if the Japanese are willing to kill themselves to fight Israel, why don't you? Although we've generally forgotten about the JRA, that attack was huge news in the 70s, and as far as I know, was the first suicide attack in the Middle East.
Posted by: marxy at February 10, 2005 12:56 AMAnd I quote from the Wikipedia:
The first suicide bombing of the modern phase of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was carried out by a Japanese person.

It's going to take more than a quote from the Wikipedia to back up a claim as serious as this one.
Here's why I'm skeptical. The Lod event was in the early seventies right? Was it '73? Did we see a rash of suicide bombings by Palestinians immediately after that, or even say in the remainder of the '70's? I'm not very knowledgeable on this, but I as I mentioned above, my impression was that things started to pick up vis-a-vis suicide attacks in the mid-80's. Doesn't sounds like a very direct influence from those JRA kooks does it?
I looked at that Wikipedia article. The earliest middle-eastern suicide bombing mentioned in the article was carried out in the middle-ages by tbe Crusaders.
Good night, Marxy. Pleasant dreams.
Posted by: sparkligbeatnic at February 10, 2005 1:09 AMa "the wizard" video game is a very very horrible idea.
Posted by: trevor at February 10, 2005 7:11 AMChanging the subject, how about a video game based on the movie "Swing Girls". It's a fairly entertaining bit of fluff, albeit thinly disguised propaganda for Yamaha. I watched it on a JAL flight.
I think you would have a field day with this film Marxy.

Ah, yes, img tags don't work.
Here's the link to the cover of the soundtrack:

Posted by: sparkligbeatnic at February 10, 2005 11:59 AMI've heard of Swing Girls. Why is it propaganda for Yamaha? I'm intrigued. (I have to say, their synths are built to last.)
Posted by: marxy at February 10, 2005 12:19 PM
It's a commercial for brass instruments and music lessons. But it's well done. "School of Rock" it ain't. Nonetheless I recommend it.
Cant comment on game #1, but as far as game #2 goes, it is unwinnable right? Are we talking like an adventure/fighting type game or a Street Fighter type game? Either way, it should be 最クソゲー?
Posted by: Chris_B at February 11, 2005 8:57 PMcan we also get
1. a "enjo kosai" (paid dating)game?
2. a "hanbei" game where we get to repel the u.s. troops from okinawa?
3. a "chikan" game where we can either grope or be groped on the train line of our choice? (we could do this as a tie-in with the "densha de go!" game
http://www.taito.co.jp/d3/cp/dengofinal/
4. aum shin rikyo" the revenge! - a spiritual cult gone wrong game...
5. auto-xenophobia - a let's keep gaijin out of tokyo but strive to stay foreign game? naturally this could only be a ONE PLAYER game...
and so on and so forth...
Posted by: r. at February 12, 2005 3:29 PMr: I've seen doujinshi game examples of 1-3 on the back streets of Akihabara. There are far too many commercial hentai games for computers. There have even been some Famicom and PC Engine hentai games. Ask momus to consult on #5.
