On Losing

You know why France lost the World Cup? No Shinto.

Zidane would have played better if he'd stuck to Buddhism's Noble Eightfold Path: Right Understanding, Right Thought, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness and Right Concentration.

Or even the Lotus Buddha's anti-headbutting sutras!

Despite all of its soccer shinto, Japan didn't fare much better...

yesterday evening was delightfully quiet and soothing. a true shinto moment, at last, in paris.

i heard on the new today i quote about zidane's head butt seen around the world. "genius is next to madness, and we saw zidane's madness". or something close to that.
and btw, i though momus wasn't, didn't watch football. let alone the world cup. ??

I watched about ten minutes of it, including the headbutt. The rest of the time I was watching a very slow, very lovely documentary about the flora and fauna of the high Alps on the other channel. It was gripping: marmots, people! Gambling marmots!

(Actually, the marmots were gamboling, not gambling, but it's a lovely image.)

I think Trevor misses a bigger point: the Internet allows you to know about everything without even actually seeing anything yourself.

Just like how watching I

I use Wikipedia in a similar way in intellectual discussions. "Hmm, I'm not familiar with that concept you have studied extensively. Give me 30 seconds and I will be ready to discuss further with you!!" Just kidding, I would never do that.

Oh no, I forget making a heart that way makes some blogs think it's a hanging tag. How embarrassing!

that first paragraph is/should have been:

Just like how watching I (heart) the 70s reruns doesn't make me wish I could have experienced those trends the first time around, but rather that I enjoy the show's 2000s-era format. Snazzy motion graphics, fast-paced editing *and* Michael Ian Black?! I didn't need to see that retro sitcom the first time around, just skip to the summary + witty commentary, prz!

it was obviously done through classic holywood techniques. when zidane left the field walking pass the glittering cup (like some john wayne in a john ford movie) exiting the frame with the camera still fixed on the cup we all knew who's going to win. then to make it more obvious the dude who misses the penalty kick actually tries a repeat of zidane's earlier PK.
