Kiiiiiii Art at the Hiromi Yoshii Gallery

Here are some close-ups from Kiiiiiii's large art piece currently being shown at the Hiromi Yoshii gallery:

Um... I dont get it. This looks like kindergarten construction paper projects. This is in a gallery? Not trying to bash your choice of what to post, its your place after all. I just really dont get it. Did you post these because you like Kiiiiiii?

Ha ha ha, I'm looking forward to the answer to that one!

Yeah, these pictures are kind of out of context. The work spreads about 9 meters across the wall and is overflowing with these small, childish felt pieces.

I posted a pop-up image of the entire work. If you're not a felt Bible-school Jesus fan, you're probably still not going to like it.

OK then, glad to know my transformation to dastardly ex-pat curmudgeon is still ongoing. I can probably live out my years without another kids felt "art" project passing before my eyes.

More than anything else, I'm impressed as their perserverence. It must've taken forever to make all that stuff.

Or they just enlisted a Vacation Bible School class.

I don't think Marxy has given you a full disclosure of his vested interest in Kiiiiiii, Chris, but that's his job, not mine.

I try as much as possible to keep my private life offline, and for the record, I have been a Kiiiiiii fan way before I had any personal interaction with the members. I remixed "Four Little Joeys" completely without permission, just laying sounds over their mp3 and then sending it to them as a self-introduction.

I was also the "International Coordinator" on the Shugo Tokumaru album, but I don't think that takes away from my honest adoration for his music.

芸の人seem to have carte blanche when it comes to crossing/mixing media. Maybe thats a good thing, I dont know. Since in the US we pigeon hole entertainers into one category, (tv, music, film, art) I still get confused when "musicians" do art or act or offer their opinions on variety shows. Oh what a pitiful example of a 18th Century Englightenment Man I am...

Chris: I totally understand your views on cross-media artists. I don't trust the fact that Vincent Gallo makes music, for example. And I always worry that no one that reads the rhetoric on this site is going to jump to a store to buy my CD.

I advise you to stay suspicious, but I also would caution against describing Kiiiiiii as "music" until you've seen them live. They are more like a music-based performance art unit with catchy songs.

Everyone knows that Felt Applique is rushing fast onto the scene. It allows for the kind of nice, bold colours and clean lines that vector art has spread, but also gives the tactile sensation & childish notions of imperfection that vector art has created a vacuum of. Much as "Revolver" style psychedelic line drawings and marker drawings have exploded.

No defense of Shugo Tokumaru needed here. I was just playing it for someone last nite and he loved it. Didn't know there was any connection to Kiiiiiii tho, not that I know the first thing about them.
