"15% of Nagasaki students believe the dead can be resurrected".

Ummm....

The original study can be found here: http://www.pref.nagasaki.jp/cgi-local/koho_cgi/kensei_news.cgi?mode=detail_disp&yymmdd=20050124&year=2005&month=01&day=24&dno=09&pno=01&key=&pageno=

Obviously, the study is pretty flawed, as it seems that the kids are only given a few choices as to why they think this way. They should be allowed to give their own answers.

However, to twist a phrase, "if you believe it, they will come". Here's hoping to a zombie uprising in Nagasaki!

"Here's hoping to a zombie uprising in Nagasaki!"

Yeah, Biohazzard-like. I'm sure the Umbrella Corporation will behind all of it...

i hope it's like the guitar wolf movie. lock'n'loll!

maybe it was the 15% who didn't take the survey seriously.

Before we scoff too much at the credulity of these Nagasaki students, let's look at the beliefs of Americans. According to a 2003 Harris poll

http://www.harrisinteractive.com/harris_poll/index.asp?PID=359

89% of Americans believe in miracles, 68% believe in the devil, 69% in hell, 51% in ghosts, 31% in astrology and 27% in reincarnation.

In America, says Harris, "90% of adults believe in God -- that includes 93% of women, 96% of African-Americans and 93% of Republicans but only 86% of men, 85% of those with postgraduate degrees, and 87% of political independents. The 84% of those who believe in the survival of the soul after death include 89% of women but only 78% of men, 86% of those without a college degree but only 78% of those with postgraduate degrees. The 84% of the public who believe in miracles falls to 72% among those with postgraduate degrees, and rises to 90% among women and 90% among African-Americans. The 82% who believe in heaven includes 89% of women but only 75% of men and falls to 71% among people aged 25 to 29 and those with postgraduate degrees."

Which reminds me, Marxy, WHERE IS YOUR PROMISED DECONSTRUCTION OF AMERICA? It's a pretty big project, isn't it? You're probably saving it for the afterlife, ne?

How many Americans believe that the dead can be brought back to life, i.e. medically?

To appease all of you, I posted this article because it's a incredible headline for myriad reasons:

1) If it's true that Nagasaki students believe that you can resurrect the dead.
2) If the Nagasaki prefectural board's ridiculous survey came to this conclusion.
3) If it's true that you can resurrect the dead and only 15% believe it!

I should write up "Deconstructing America" sometime soon. I just got some translation and magazine work that will be done next week, so maybe after that.

NB "resurect" has a very different meaning that "be reborn". And anyway, surveys are meaningless, 80% of the people surveyed agree.
