Juno 106

I was biking home from the OK Fred office when I spotted an abandoned Roland Juno 106 polyphonic analog 80s synth out in the street. It was moments from raining, so I decided to save the thing from most definite water-based ruin. Plugged it in - it works! A little wonky - an octave of keys doesn't function and the sound is scratchy - but it's certainly not bad for free. I'll add it to my other half-working 1980s Japanese analog synths. Anyone know somewhere to get this repaired? Five-g won't repair synths it didn't originally sell to you.

I already have a Juno-6, which essentially does the same thing as the 106 (but better). Trying to figure out what to do with this beast in the long term...

Sooo jealous. My best score on Japanese trash day was a bright red semi-broken portable record player that folded up like a tiny suitcase.

this actually reminds of an "Japanese exchange" house at our university. Each April, when these students were packing to go back, they would dump all their designer wares into the bin behind their building. Us poor western students would be waiting behind the dumpsters to pick up the stash. Those were good times.

marxy wasn't going through the trash though... he just happened to spot it while "biking home"

My fault. Forgot to ask! Just sent my friend from DigiDesign to find out where! hopefully he'll get back to be soon!

Lucky!

All I ever noticed of any interest in the trash was probably this unicycle:

Not that I picked it up. :)

Marxy from my friend:

I know that there's a similar synth store on the top floor of the building opposite Tower Records Shibuya. I don't know if they do repairs, but it's worth a look just to see what they have.

One thought: If Five G and this other store don't offer repair service to non-customers, then they might be able to suggest a place, since it's not competition.

Another thought: The back of Sound and Recording lacks small specialty shop ads like US magazines often have. I'm guessing that Keyboard (in Japan) is the same, since I think they're both published by Rittor Music.

Hope this helps you...

Thanks, Fleep.

I know that place, and they are generally unfriendly.

I found somewhere else that has a lot of experiences fixing Juno-106s and it seems that it will cost about 20,000. I don't know if I care that much.

I asked Five-G once who could fix my Juno-6 and they said that they didn't know anything about synth repair. Yeah, right.

You may want to check with an online analog synth community to see what your options are in the area. I often ask questions to my friends then realize I should just look it up, so I empathize... :)

circuit bending in case you want to simply make it into something else.

I used to hang out a lot with these guys back in the day (analogue heaven) before I went to digital hell. Usually quite helpful and charmingly nerdy.

I bought a midi cable, and the Juno's perfectly functional when being controlled from other sources. So I don't need to get the keyboard fixed. And the noise seesm to have gone away for the moment.

Score.

Still taking up a lot of room though.

I ve found that JUNO 106 for sale, but the owner says:
"Roland Juno 106 - 200$
> This item needs work. When it turns on it produces a continuous drone, which
> seems to respond to some slider movements and pressings of the keys.
> Included is the original, 2-pronged power cable. I just don't have the
> patience to get it repaired. Maybe you know what's wrong and can fix this."

Do you think I should go through this, or should i walk away ?

Do you finally know someone that could fix that in NYC ?

I think you can get a working one these days for about $250. I wouldn't buy it.
