Captain EO
![]() | Surely a film made by superstar musician Michael Jackson, superstar producer George Lucas, and superstar director Francis Ford Coppola - a work that supposedly had the highest per-minute cost in the entire history of film - would be an obvious candidate for a DVD release. So I thought at least, until I saw a bootleg tape of Captain Eo last night. This was my first viewing of the spectacular, mostly due to the weird fate of visiting Epcot's 3-D theater the year right before Eo premiered and the year after it finally closed. I can state with upmost objectivity that no one will ever release this film again, nor dare speak its name - unless you think turning evil robots into breakdancers and that 80s fake, synthesized slap bass sound are gearing for a comeback. There is a glorious trainwreck quality to the production, however, and there are some challenging puzzles to solve - for example, how could special effects be so unbelievably terrible almost a decade after Star Wars? |

Hello Marcxy.
I was looking for some article about Nagi Noda and I was so surprised to find your blog. Because it's so great, and why I could not find it until today?? You wrote what I wanted to write everything already! and your knowledge and experience for arts are "of course" much better than me. Maybe when I want to introduce some art, design entertainment in Japan, what I should do would be link to you site!! :-)
Kakkoiidesu!!

What will Kiiiiiii say when they hear this Marxy? You'll make them cry! Unless, you already watched it with them. Which will make me cry; cry the bitter, hot tears of jealousy.

I can't deny that my Eo viewing was Kiiiiiii related. They of course love Michael unconditionally, but are not particulary great defenders of this one featurette.

Damn, that's weird. I spend most of the afternoon editing an article Mari did for the shitpoke magazine I work for and she turns up here, too. Who would've thunk it?
As for Eo, all I can ask is: are we talking even worse than Moonwalker here...? Oh, that and: where the hell can I get a copy?

Oh, actually, I just found a transcript for said movie here (scroll down the page a little - it's all there). Scrub that second request, I think I'll be happy to pass on this one...

I saw Captain EO at Epcot in FL.
The movie was cack in every way, but it did have some of the best 3D I've ever seen in a theatre (next to Andy Warhol's Frankenstein)
Both Coppola and Scorsese temporarily lost their minds and worked with Jackson. What$were$they$thinking?

yes, but that poster is fresh.

Oh, and fake synth slap bermp bermp bass never died and never will.
Fretless bass slides went out in '97 though.

I'm sure if Lucas re-releases this film, he'll replace the production choices of the soundtrack - to the chagrin of Captain Eo maniacs.

I lived in FL, close enough to Orlando before I moved there, (and then eventually from there) to have had at least one or two compulsory Epcot visits under my belt.
Captain EO is the sort of thing that ego-maniacs make when said ego-maniacs are incredibly popular in the pop charts... It has that sort of 'carte-blanche' aspect that Waterworld probably got after Dances with Wolves... It's always a bad idea to give ego-freakers a blank cheque for mayhem... You need someone controlling the purse-strings, and that person would hopefully veto the breakdancing robots on fire.

This is usually true. Sgt. Peppers is the other side of the coin though. EMI could have pulled the purse-strings and said "you guys can't order a full orchestra" but they let the Beatles do what they wanted.
