PS3 Lines as Metaphors for Japan/America

American PS3 Lines: fights, arguments, BB gun attacks, robberies - overall, slightly violent and rowdy.

Japanese PS3 Lines: relatively peaceful and good-natured from afar, but semi-sinister on closer inspection - with the mainstream media avoiding reports of anything that might crack Sony's corporate PR message or may open difficult questions about socioeconomic class.

Bonus comparision:

First Japanese PS3 buyer: Chinese man who cannot speak Japanese.
First American Wii buyer: a guy who legally changed his middle name to "Triforce."

It makes me so, so happy that the first person to buy a Wii changed his middle name to "Triforce" and was wearing a Nintindo Power Glove when shaking Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime's hand. And he camped out for a week, he totally deserves it! I want people like that to get the first one.

Though if you are going to be comparing PS3 and Wii sales, you have to address the supply/demand issues. There are just a whole lot more Wii to go around, so it's much less desperate. I have several friends who procured one by camping out last night, but nothing crazier than that. I imagine the Wii debut in Japan won't be as intense as the PS3 one.

But seriously, if you are going to give yourself a Zelda-related middle name, I don't think that "Triforce" is a very good choice. It's still proves his hardcore fandom, but seriously, it isn't convincing as a name. He should have thought about it more.

F. Scott Fitzgerald's wife: biggest Nintendo fan ever?

Maybe, but I totally want to see a game where Zelda is a flapper right now.

the dark side of the ps3 debut in the US also has its lighter side :

"...In Springfield, Indiana, three men were robbed by masked gunmen as they walked away from a line prior to the opening of the store -- stealing the money that the men had intended on using to purchase their game systems. Even a rapist, wearing nothing more than boxers and tennis shoes when he escaped from a hospital, was discovered near a store selling PS3s. He was turned in by someone who thought he was stealing one of the game systems."

Only his middle name? He clearly wasn't a very serious fan. Penn Jillette gave his daughter "Crimefighter" as her middle name because she'll never be using it anyway, so he says. How many of my friends even know my middle name? Maybe 10%, at most.

Watch out - I go by my middle name.

Posted by: marxy at November 21, 2006 4:30 PM

that's why you're a crimefighter.

Come on, guys. You change your middle name to something crazy/awesome so you can say "______ is my middle name."

And Marxy, I always assumed that you went by your middle name because were too many other guys with whatever "W" stands for in your family. But, now that I'm thinking about it, I assume this because that's exactly how it is in my family and I'm projecting like whoa. There is a Will and a Bill too, but a slew of relatives that punt the William first name and go straight to the middle. That's a much more graceful explanation than "My first name is embarrassing, so I use my middle name," at any rate.

I was named after my grandfather but my parents didn't want me to take on "Billy." Thus, my middle name.

I have to say that the "sinister" elements of the Japanese side of the launch were pretty small beer. It's not like there weren't speculators buying PS3s in the US.

It seems like the bigger issue is that nobody trusts the American underclass enough to use them as time-saving line proxies, or perhaps that the American underclass is not ethnically or culturally homogenous enough to be easily identified in a line-up.

In the US, the criminal element seemed to be into pretty straightforward robbery, sometimes armed. In Japan, the organized crime elements were accused of . . . hiring people to wait in line to buy a PS3.

Let's just accept it as a truism now: modern consoles are rarely widely available until 4 months after their nominal release date. Given that, who cares? You, me, and anyone smart enough to desire such a box knows that they'll be available at retail price in four months, and it's not like there's many good games you're missing out on between now and then.

BTW, the dark secret of the Wii is that its lack of HD-resolution is going to make it look ugly and dated in a year or so. It's still the console I like best of these three.

My middle name is John,
