LOHAS are NERDS (and probably poor)
![]() | What's hot for early 2007? Carbon emissions and poison exhaust, boys. Japan may have superior public transportation, but who wants to share the train with hordes of downwardly-mobile white-collar trash. Actually, let me reconsider that. Thanks to those worker bees, we now have an opportunity to easily display our capital accumulation and conspicuous waste in one single purchase: the automobile. This week Brutus gives us a nice guide to the favorite four-wheel vehicles of celebrities - a class of refined individuals who graciously act as our social betters in world bent on destroying the old (and perfect!) Confucian order. The editors also threw in a nice special on international suit designs, but I wouldn't be caught dead in a Thom Browne on the Marunouchi Line. If I don't feel like I am personally causing the polar icecaps to melt, what's even the point of being rich? |
| Sotokoto - the "LOHAS" magazine. This month is a guide to NPOs and NGOs, which is where the chronically unambitious end up working, I guess. Hey, I'm as LOHAN as the next guy, but Jesus, could they have found less appealing people to feature in a magazine? I want to know what brand of hydroponic rockwool that FPM DJ or MEGUMI prefer - not some nobody I have forgotten about even sitting next to in high school. All my favorite magazines keep going eco for some reason, but I don't get how we can reconcile the two lifestyles. (Can you imagine shoveling night soil with a LV monogram shovel? Actually, can you imagine shoveling night soil without one???) These people featured in Sotokoto, who are cleaning up other people's litter and planting beets for charity or whatever, they have so little ego it's pathetic. And all these celebrity LOHAS people are just old farts who have made it already and finally have the confidence to start saving the world. Can you imagine the 28 year-old fashion PRer or DJ event promoter on the brink of stardom associating themselves with this bunch of Uniqlo-wearing goody-goodies? |

Entirelly off the topic, but since this doesn't seem to be getting much love anyway, i'm wondering marxy where do you get your stats on Japanese magazine sales?
Thanks

ABC - the Audit Bureau of Circulation. I also have this little booklet that I got that's for media buying. I think these are just passed out to people in the biz.

is the dalai lama pathetic? because he has very little ego, as well. or is it just your everyday person who starts doing ego-less service for others that gets you scoffing? (i understand the humor around the image of the LV bag weilding compost
shoveler, don't worry). but, the dalai lama's personal possessions amount to a couple of religioius artifacts, a robe or two, and a begging bowl. how pathetic, indeed!
i've read several articles about the LOHAS movement and most of the people were, of course, not celebrities, they were young-ish people who decided to move out of the big cities toward the countryside where they could live at a slower pace, grow their own food, etc. of course, they weren't well-known celebrites either, but they were people who "had something to lose" by changing their lifestyles, and went ahead and did it anyway.
do you seriously have that much contempt for "normal" people who join these organizations and make ego-diminishing choices, choices that just remind the rest of us of the consumer and celebrity worshipping whores that we really are? :)

No, I don't have that much contempt.

Magazines featuring ugly and poor nerds with little ego ? Sounds like something for me (wait, it sounds exactly like me - just got to get rid of the LOHAS content though)
