SXSW X MXY X KIIIIIII IN TX
Tomorrow I am heading off to SXSW in Austin, TX as support staff for Kiiiiiii. Those coming down should check out u.t. and Lakin' play at Beauty Bar on Wednesday night (14th) at 8:00 and earlier in the day (4:00) at Todd P's showcase.
I will hopefully be able to post some reportage from the week in semi-real time.
This year, 1,300 bands are attending - an astounding number that makes navigation and curation a serious necessity for the conference attendee. Trusted expert on the American "indy" scene - Marxie - provides a list of "must-see" bands for your comfort and inclusion:
| The Mae Shi | Metalchicks | Lo Fi-FNK |
| Lesbian | Any Band with Les Claypool | Lords (UK) |
| Lesbians On Ecstasy | Fornicated (VICE Records) | Lords (US) |
| Les Lesbians | The Cinnabons | Lords (JP) |
| Holy F*ck | Holy Sh*t! | Holy F*ckin Sh*t! |
| Tia Carrera (ex-Wayne's World) | !!? | VietNow (RATM coverband) |

Hey! Just wanted to let you know I about jumped off my seat when I saw Kiiiiiii in the newest Nylon, then I noticed you wrote it and I got more excited. Keep up the good work! Wish I could make it down there!

1,300 bands? lesse, thats like 5000 people at least with band members and hangers on, add another 5,000 for all the smarm and scum such things attract, maybe 3,000 "industry" scum and another 1,000 for the side events and you got more people coming into Austin than an incoming freshman class at UT. No wonder my friends who still live there hate SXSW so much.

i think marxy along with the other chosen 5000 has gained entrance into rock'n roll heaven and is hereafter beyond criticism.

I just saw Holy Fuck open for Clinic in Boston the other night. I was skeptical when a friend described them as "experimental electronic," but my reservations were instantly dispelled by their funky brilliance.

"i think marxy along with the other chosen 5000 has gained entrance into rock'n roll heaven and is hereafter beyond criticism."
Is this an AlinBot glitch or a legitimate snipe?

Surely "Beyond Criticism" is a Deleuzian essay, no?

I suppose it's perfectly reasonable that a double bind of pretension and a need for ranking plus a zillion similar-sounding bands leads perfectly sane people to devolve into music criticism that has nothing to do with music, a la Pitchfork. Meanwhile I can't see American modern jazz I want to because those bands are stuck in Toyko.

There was a documentary about Austin on SBS a few weeks back. It looked interesting and quirky, with its uni city vibe, but at the same predictable and a bit boring (it made me think of Melbourne).
Having recently become with a couple from Texas-New Mexico place, my impression is that they seemed to be more excited about Sydney and Melbourne than with Austin, even though they missed Mexican food a lot.
But anyway anyway, aren't the Butthole Surfers from there?

"But anyway anyway, aren't the Butthole Surfers from there?"
Yes, as were The 13th Floor Elevators, Janis Joplin, Willie Nelson, The Big Boys, The Dicks, Scratch Acid, and lots and lots of other musicians. Austin seems to have always been a fertile place for music -- which is probably why South by Southwest was started there in the first place.
That festival sounds like kind of a nightmare to me, but I hear some of the bands playing this year are actually worth the hype, such as this hot, young band that everybody's buzzing about called The Stooges.

I still listen to The Big Boys and Poison 13.
Austin was a great place to be a musician, no matter what sort of thing you wanted to play you could do it on your own or find others to do it with.
